While primarily developed for scour protection, Rockbags have potential to be classed as a Nature-Inclusive Design (NID). The NID approach refers to methods and technologies that can be integrated into the design and construction of commercial marine infrastructure to create a suitable habitat for native species and communities whose natural habitat has been degraded or reduced.

FjordStrong were invited to assess the potential role of Rockbags as Artificial Fisheries Nurseries (AFNs), while also exploring potential ecological effects on the wider benthic community and estimating the added value to the ecosystem in terms of annual biomass production.

To address this challenge, a comprehensive report was successfully delivered, comparing fish densities, length frequencies and species occurrences between the Rockbags and suitable control sites using data collected from Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) transects and Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) surveys.

By providing hard complex 3D habitat with a high degree of variation and access to interstitial spaces, Rockbags have considerable potential to harbour significantly more marine biodiversity and facilitate enhanced productivity rates in comparison to traditional solutions.
This was demonstrated in our report which showed notable biomass of 3 commercial fish species at all Rockbag sites, all of which were measured to be below adult size. Importantly, minimum biomass of juveniles at Rockbags was considerably higher than even the highest observations at control sites.
Furthermore, the surrounding mesh that is used to retain the rocks was shown to act as suitable substrate for colonisation by both macroalgaes (e.g. kelp) and sessile invertebrates such as mussels, tunicates and bryozoans. Our surveys also revealed their function as a physical means of excluding predators, thereby reinforcing its potential to function as an AFN by decreasing predation mortality. This use of nursery habitat was demonstrated by juvenile fish who were observed moving out of the Rockbag mesh holes to forage, before returning for protection.
These findings helped our client bolster their case to be classed as a suitable Nature Inclusive Design for the Offshore Environment and will hopefully lead to enhanced biodiversity around our growing offshore wind farm industry.
FjordStrong’s work has provided us with a solid scientific basis on the positive biodiversity role of our product, and the selection of underwater highlights has drawn a lot of interest from the wider industry. We look forward to working with FjordStrong again on larger projects in the near future.

Marine Surveys

Using bait to attract wide-roaming wildlife into the survey platform, our bespoke Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems are tailored to perform under the high current speeds encountered in the North East Atlantic. Rated to a depth of 250 meters, they are a rapid and cost effective tool for surveying marine biodiversity, with dual independent lights facilitating round the clock surveying.

Our stereo-imaging techniques are optimised for moderate turbidity levels, allowing our analysts to take accurate measurements through a technique known as photogrammetry without removing specimens from their habitat. Covering both the demersal and pelagic regions, our BRUVs can provide reliable data on:

  • Species Inventories
  • Accurate Measurements and Biomass Estimates
  • Relative Abundances
  • Species Interactions
  • Temporal Changes and Patterns
  • Growth Rates and Overall Condition
Consultancy & Data Processing

In addition to generating our own data through zero-impact methods, FjordStrong extends our technical expertise and domain knowledge to provide comprehensive assessments of third-party datasets. Our team employs advanced analytical techniques to distil complex data into clear, actionable reports that uncover valuable patterns, trends, and insights. Get in touch to see how we can help your project navigate the challenges with biodiversity data to make informed decisions that contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
