We are thrilled to introduce our newest team member, Dr Mark Hoppner, a passionate marine biologist

Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and a love for the ocean. With a firm belief that understanding and protecting our marine ecosystems is crucial for the future of our planet. He is more than ready to make changes in the world of marine biology.  At Fjordstrong we are excited for this new collaboration of exploration, discovery and conservation with Mark. whose expertise and enthusiasm will inspire the Fjordstrong team.

Mark’s greatest passion is marine conservation

Throughout his academic journey he has been dedicated to understanding and mitigating human-induced environmental change in marine ecosystems. Mark’s educational journey began with a BSc (Hons) in Zoology, followed by an MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Recently, Mark completed his PhD thesis at Queen’s University Belfast. This is where he explored sensory-based methods for bycatch reduction in fisheries. Mark’s research centred on understanding the visual systems of marine animals and how their behaviour is influenced by visual stimuli, such as artificial lights. This work is a vital contribution to what we are working on at Fjordstrong.

Throughout his previous research, Mark has maintained a track record of successful collaborations with a wide array of stakeholders, including government departments, scientific research organisations and the fishing industry. He has worked to develop bycatch reduction solutions that promote the sustainable use of our marine resources.

Aspires to make a tangible, real-world impact on our oceans

Making a positive impact on our oceans is a mission that aligns with Fjordstrong’s ethos of marine conservation. As a Scientific Officer at Fjordstrong, Mark leverages his scientific background and expert knowledge of animal vision to improve the efficacy of artificial lights in marine biodiversity surveys. His relentless commitment to creating innovative, technology-driven solutions persits. It’s this commitment that enhances our efforts towards preserving and understanding the biodiversity beneath our seas.

At Fjordstrong we are very excited to have Mark on board, with his passion for the marine world and his commitment to environmental conservation, Mark embodies the spirit and values we have here at Fjordstrong .
